Neighborhood Watch
Hiwan (Filings 1-4) is in the process of creating an active Neighborhood Watch. The subdivision has been divided into 10 sections. The Coordinator is Judy Merkel. The first meeting was held at the Hagens’ home. Each section will have a Co-coordinator assigned to it. The Co-coordinators will be asking residents in each section to assist them as Captains in each area. We have had 9 neighbors volunteer to be Co-coordinators: Larry Hagen, Sylvia Robertson, Andrea Brito-Amador, Bernie Weingardt, Anne Andrus, Don Bennett, Thom Tydeman, Patrick Fairbanks, and Wendi Barnes. We will be adding one more Co-coordinator.
What is Neighborhood Watch ?
Neighborhood Watch is the partnership of the Sheriff’s Office with the community and neighbors with each other. It creates a better communication between the Sheriff’s Office and the community providing Crime Alerts, Crime Prevention information and Safety Alerts. Neighbors become better acquainted with each other and watch out for each other and their property. This in turn creates a safer neighborhood increasing the quality of life and property values.
What does a Coordinator do?
· Recruits Co-coordinators for each area.
· The Coordinator receives Emails from the Sheriff’s Office regarding any crime trends, suspicious activity and safety issues.
· The Coordinator passes this information onto the Co-coordinators.
The Coordinator contacts the Sheriff’s Office regarding any concerns or criminal activity not in progress in the area.
What does a Co-coordinator do?
· Recruit Captains to assist with notifications to the members
The Co-coordinator Emails the Captains with the vital information
What does a Captain do?
· Recruits active members
· Host the initial meeting with the members and the Sheriff’s Office
· The Captains Email the active members in their area vital information
The Captains receive non emergency complaints from citizens and forward the information to the Sheriff’s Office.
What does a member do?
· The members are the eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Office.
If they see any suspicious activity or crimes in progress from their home or while driving through the area, they call 911
IMMEDIATELY! They don’t delay. Calling the Sheriff’s Office immediately, is the best way to apprehend criminals and stop their criminal activities in the area.
What Neighborhood Watch is NOT:
· You do NOT patrol your area.
· Neighborhood Watch is NOT vigilantes attempting to apprehend criminals on their own.
How do you qualify as an active Neighborhood Watch?
There are only two requirements;
80% participation in an area.
One social event per year.
Doesn’t this seem very simple? It is. A Coordinator, Co-coordinator and Captain may have to devote a total of about 1-3 hours of effort per year once the Neighborhood Watch is active. When your Co-coordinator contacts you in the near future to help as a
Captain, please help them and your neighborhood out. As you see there is very little time and effort involved. When asked to be an active member please say yes. It takes very little to enhance our community. You don’t know if you may be the next victim of a crime that could have been prevented by your neighbor being vigilant.
Please contact Judy Merkel for more information about neighborhood watch or to obtain contact information for the Coordinator assigned to the area where you live. Judy can be reached at 303-674-1835, or by email to
